February is Career & Technical Education Month! We're celebrating the exciting CTE opportunities that Spuds can experience at the MHS Career Academy. Next up is The Family and Consumer Sciences:

The Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) department at Moorhead High School provides students with essential life skills and hands-on career exploration. Our team of expert educators includes Katie Boer, Johanna Heigaard, Alison Johnson, Alisha MacDonald, and LaRae Rosenfeldt.

Our curriculum is designed for real-world application, offering courses in Food Basics, Child Development, Interior Design, and a robust Culinary track. In our culinary courses, students have the valuable opportunity to earn their ServSafe credential, an industry-recognized certification that jumpstarts their professional careers.
A standout feature of our program is the Child Development II (Working with Children) course, where students collaborate directly with the Jumpstart (4-year-old) classroom housed right here in the Career Academy. Beyond the classroom, our department is home to FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), a leadership-focused CTSO that was newly introduced to the district in the 2024-25 school year.

The Hjemkomst Center has long stood as a symbol of Moorhead’s history and culture, but it’s the people inside who keep that story alive. Two Moorhead High alums now work there preserving local history, from century-old photographs to immigrant traditions, while helping new generations see how deeply the past connects to the present. February is Career & Technical Education Month! We're celebrating the exciting CTE opportunities that Spuds can experience at the MHS Career Academy. We start it off this week with Business & Entrepreneurship:

The Moorhead High School Business Department—led by faculty members Leah Spotts, Kathi Salvevold and Trish Roningen—provides students with a competitive edge in the modern professional world. Beyond the classroom, our department manages the School Store at both campus sites, offering students a "living lab" to practice retail management and operations in real-time.

Our department is the proud home of Business Professionals of America (BPA), our premier Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). We are excited to celebrate our multiple participants headed to the State Leadership Conference next month!

We also take pride in hosting the Personal Finance course—a vital program that has recently become a Minnesota state graduation requirement. From managing the school store to earning college credits and competing at the state level, our students graduate ready for financial independence and career success.

Happy Black History Month! This is a time to honor the trailblazers who helped shape the world we live in today. Septima Poinsette Clark was a pioneering leader in citizenship education during the Civil Rights Movement, and her work played a critical role in advancing voting rights, directly influencing the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. 📚#FoundationsForTheFuture

Black History Month February 2026 Septima Poinsette Clark
Septima Poinsette Clark 1898-1987 Septima Poinsette Clark, often referred to as the Mother of the Movement, was an African American educator and civil rights activist. She created citizenship schools that taught adults how to read and write and understand their rights so they could vote. Her work helped lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “I believe unconditionally in the ability of people to respond when they are told the truth. We need to be taught to study rather than believe, to inquire rather than to affirm.”
