Join us behind the scenes at MAPS! Today we are taking a look at the story of the bison statue at Horizon Middle School. Did you know that the bison statue was part of a local art event in 2005 called Herd About the Prairie? Forty fiberglass bison were created and painted by local artists to be sold in an auction to help fund creative projects and artists in our community. An additional four bison were given to local schools to be painted by students, one of which went to Horizon. The bison was painted by Spud art club students and still sits outside the art room!

Spud Families, In December, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ Reading and Math test from NWEA® on their chromebook at school. The scores from these tests are only for internal use in our district. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students. About the Test: MAP Growth tests are unique, and it adapts to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly. MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically. Test Dates: December 6-10: Reading December 13-17: Math *If your child is absent for any reason and returns to school prior to the test window closing, we’ll do our best to test them. What Students will need: Chromebook - they will be asked to leave their chromebook at school on Friday, December 3 Wired Headphones - extra headphones will be provided to each class but there will not be enough for all students on testing day. Please help ease student stress by reassuring them that this is just to see how much they have learned this year and that they should just do their best. We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit. Sincerely, Dr. Amanda Henry
