Final Return to Learn Plan Approved

August 18, 2020

On August 17, 2020, the Moorhead School Board approved the Return to Learn plan developed over the past several months by Moorhead Area Public School administration collaboratively with guidance from state and local government agencies as well as input from staff and families.

In this plan, three learning models were developed and the district will move between the models based on community covid case counts that are updated weekly. The state released guidance that clearly shows which learning model will be used for elementary and secondary levels at the current case count levels.

Although current community Covid-19 case rate in the state rubric indicates in-person learning model for elementary students, the board approved a resolution to have all students begin the year in hybrid learning for the first several weeks of school to ensure a safe and smooth transition back to in-person learning. On Monday, September 21, the district will transition to the designated state rubric learning model.

Spud Academy is a newly developed option offered for families who are looking for a full time distance learning option for their student. Spud Academy students will be issued district owned Chromebooks and completing their courses exclusively through distance learning. Approximately 1000 students have enrolled in this option at this time.

The Return to Learn plan was developed with the guiding principles of Safety, Flexibility, Equity and Community. Mental and social emotional health of students and staff is a primary concern and social-emotional learning is an important part of the curriculum delivered in each of the learning models.

“As a Spud community, we are committed to putting our students first, caring for our neighbors and facing this challenge together with all hands on deck. We are stronger, smarter and safer together. I am confident that together we can make this an outstanding year for our staff, students and entire Spud community,” said Superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak.
