September Spud Spirit Awards 2026

Moorhead Area Public Schools has named Robert Asp Elementary teacher Emily Monroe and Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) teacher Jesse Ott as the September 2026 Spud Spirit Award recipients. Presented by Superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak, this monthly honor celebrates staff members who cultivate safe, inclusive environments while helping every child thrive. Both educators exemplify the district’s core mission to develop the maximum potential of all learners through unwavering empathy, exceptional work ethic, and deep community relationships.

Emily Monroe
Leading with Compassion and Professional Excellence

Emily Monroe creates a classroom dynamic where high academic expectations go hand in hand with deep, intentional relationships. Recognized by Dr. Lunak for her forward-thinking, solutions-based mindset, Emily approaches every challenge as an opportunity for growth. Her dedication extends far beyond her own students; through The Catalyst Approach Demonstration Project, she has opened her classroom doors to hundreds of district educators, allowing peers to observe her receiving coaching on the 12 Foundational Skills.

Emily’s resilience and warmth shine brightest during life's most demanding moments. As a new mom, she gracefully balances early mornings with sleep-deprived nights caring for a teething baby, standing at her classroom door with a welcoming smile to ensure every child receives her full attention, dedication, and love from the very first bell.

Jesse Ott
A Humble Team Player Building Student Confidence

Jesse Ott serves as a DAPE teacher whose selfless teamwork and humility uplift the entire school community. Always ready to lend a hand, Jesse routinely assists colleagues during staffing shortages and volunteers his mornings to help classrooms establish smooth, successful routines.

In his physical education space, Jesse builds predictable, engaging learning environments tailored to his students' needs. He actively instills self-worth in his learners through daily positive affirmations, ensuring every child leaves his class knowing they are smart, strong, and kind. His quiet leadership and commitment to inclusion make him a true champion for the district's students.

Together, Emily Monroe and Jesse Ott highlight the powerful impact of relationship-based education. Their daily commitment to supporting students and colleagues alike demonstrates the very best of the Moorhead Area Public Schools community.
