Moorhead Area Public Schools superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak paid a morning visit to Ellen Hopkins Elementary School to present Darlene Else with the Spud Spirit Award for June 2026. Darlene is a food and nutrition server who joined the district in 2022. Darlene was honored for the genuine care and positivity she brings to the Hopkins Elementary School every day.
“Darlene brings a warm light of kindness to Ellen Hopkins,” said Dr. Lunak, echoing the sentiments of her nominator. “Whether she’s greeting students in the serving line or lending a hand to a coworker, her genuine care makes everyone’s day a little brighter.” Darlene, who is known for her contagious joyful spirit, approaches her work in Food Services with a heart-first philosophy. No matter how long the rush or how busy the kitchen becomes, she greets every student and staff member with a smile that instantly lifts the mood.
Beyond her helpfulness, Darlene is a vocal champion for the students' well-being. She is often heard talking positively about the meals she serves, encouraging students to “give it a try!” with an enthusiasm that makes the cafeteria feel like a place of connection and warmth rather than just a lunchroom.
