The Spud Speech dynasty has reached a historic milestone. On Friday, April 24, 2026, the Moorhead High School Speech team secured its 10th consecutive MSHSL Class AA State Championship at Park Center High School.
The Spuds delivered a powerhouse performance, compiling a team score of 70 points, finishing nearly 30 points ahead of runners-up Lakeville North and Apple Valley, who tied for second with 41 points.
A Perfect Ten
Moorhead’s incredible streak began in 2016, the first year the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) began awarding team titles for speech. With this latest victory, the Spuds remain the only program in Class AA history to have held the team championship trophy consistently, maintaining a decade-long grip on the top spot.
"It’s a perfect 10 for the Moorhead High School Speech team," the MSHSL reported following the tournament.
Strength in Numbers
The championship was a team effort, defined by the depth of talent across the roster. Moorhead advanced an impressive 17 entries into the championship final rounds. While the competition was fierce, the Spuds' ability to place finalists in nearly every category provided the points necessary to pull away from the field.
Four Spuds earned individual silver medals, finishing as State Runners-Up in their respective categories:
Miriam Culloton: Humorous Interpretation
Jack Simon: Informative Speaking
Sami Jama: Serious Interpretation of Drama
Norah Carlson: Serious Interpretation of Prose
Continuing the Legacy
This 10th consecutive title cements Moorhead High School's reputation as the premier speech program in Minnesota. The consistency required to win for a decade speaks to the dedication of the student leaders, the excellence of the coaching staff, and the unwavering support of the Moorhead community.
Congratulations to all the speakers, coaches, and families on this historic achievement. The Spud Spirit was on full display this weekend, and the legacy of excellence continues!
