A Message from Behavior Intervention

Soon we will be starting our winter break! Winter break is a great time to spend time with family and friends, relax in comfy clothes, read and play games.

One of our favorite family activities is playing games. Playing games can be fun, but also a source of stress and frustration. Playing games teaches some great social and problem solving skills. For example, taking turns, following directions, making decisions, dealing with losing, and how to be a good sport. All are important skills for children to learn and help them be successful both in and out of school.

Before playing the game, walk through different scenarios with your child of what could happen during the game. For instance, when you’re playing CandyLand, your pawn may be close to the King Candy’s Castle, but on your turn, you draw the peppermint- which means you have to go almost all the way back to the beginning. You could pose the question, “What do you do? How do you react?” Remind them you are playing the game just for fun. If they become frustrated while playing, have them practice taking a break. When they’re ready, have them re-join.

As part of the Student Support Team at SGR, one of my favorite parts of my job is getting to collaborate with families. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. You can call  218-284-5376 or email me at rgladue@moorheadschools.org.

I hope you enjoy winter break and make lasting memories with family and friends! Have a Happy New Year! See you in 2023!

Sincerely,
