A Message from Our School Counselor

Warm Greetings from Ms. Shari!

Our Monthly Theme:   HUMILITY

This month we are focusing on how having humility helps us live our best life.

As we think about this time of year, it seems only fitting that we focus on others by giving the gift of our attention.

We are learning about noticing others by looking at their faces, bodies and also what’s going on around them as clues to how they are feeling.  We are learning that it’s important to notice others because it helps us know how to best interact with them.

If others look sad, we have practiced what we can say to be helpful.  In the older grades we are learning different questions to help others rethink situations.  We can help others move from the emotional part of the brain to the logical part of the brain by asking questions like:

  1. What happened step by step?

  2. Is this the first time this has happened or do you think others may have felt this way too?

  3. What’s something good that came out of this?

Noticing how others are feeling can help us be better friends and we can learn different ways to help.  Giving the gift of our attention sends the message to others that we see them and we care about how they are feeling. Noticing how others are feeling, extending empathy then showing kindness help us work better with others.

When we notice others and respond to the way we think they are feeling, we are humbling ourselves and realizing that others matter and we are not the center of the universe.  Other people have similar feelings and experience them the same way we do. This helps us feel like we are more alike than different from other people. This is a good way to learn to be humble and include others in our thoughts and actions.  If we think of others as more like ourselves, it is easier to treat them respectfully, regardless of how different they are from us in other ways.

It is so important to always be humble and kind!
