A Message from Our School Counselor

Our Monthly Theme:  HONESTY

This month we are focusing on how being HONEST helps us live our best life.

As we wrap up our monthly study of honesty and how important it is to be honest with others as well as ourselves, let’s review the following ideas:

  1. If you don’t know the answer to something you don’t understand or need help, be honest and let others know to help you.  Chances are others will have the same questions. Everyone needs help once in a while.

  2. Along those same lines, give your best, honest effort too in situations. Don’t ask for help until you have tried your very best to solve your own problems.

  3. Being honest means that you are consistently your same self in different situations with everyone around you.

  4. Be honest with yourself and speak up when you don’t feel good about something that is going on around you, especially if it’s hurtful to you or others.

  5. Be honest and don’t take more than your fair share or take advantage of something, even if no one else will know. You’ll know and that matters.

  6. Admit to yourself and others when you have made a mistake. Take responsibility and be honest.

  7. Sometimes it’s really hard to be honest.  It’s those times when it’s probably the most important time to be honest.

In classroom lessons this week, we are continuing to learn how different people can have very different feelings about the same things. This seems like an important lesson for all of us at this time.

When we learn that someone feels differently than we do, it helps to learn why they feel that way. If we’re honest, we can talk about our life experiences that have formed our feelings and opinions.  Once we honestly share how we formed the feelings we have without blame, it will help others understand us better.

We don’t have to agree with everything everyone says. If we’re honest, we just want to be understood and respected. Feeling misunderstood is a very uncomfortable feeling. It takes courage and honesty to speak your truth…but when you do, it feels good.
