A Message from Our School Counselor

Warm Winter Greetings from Ms. Shari!

Our Monthly Theme:  HONESTY

This month we are focusing on how being HONEST helps us live our best life.

This week in our weekly video we discussed how being honest means that you are consistently your same self with everyone around you.  You treat everyone with respect and don’t act differently around your friends, teachers or anyone else.  You are your authentic self regardless of who is around you.

At SGR we teach the DeBug System. The DeBug System is just that, a system of steps to get rid of what is bugging you. The first step in the DeBug System is to ignore what is bugging you. Sometimes it’s okay to just ignore what someone is saying that bothers you but if what they are talking about is hurtful, it’s important to speak up and follow your inner voice. Sometimes it can be hard to be honest especially when you feel shy.

You know the difference between what ‘s right and wrong.  If you’re honest with yourself, you may find that it feels good to give a voice to your feelings in a respectful way. It feels good to do what you know is right. Be honest with yourself though. Is what you’re bothered by really important? Is it a big problem or a little problem?  If it’s a little problem, then it may be something that you can let be or ignore.

We are also learning about how different people can have very different feelings about the same things. This seems like an important lesson for all of us at this time.

When we learn that someone feels differently than we do about a subject, it may be worth finding out why they feel that way. If we’re honest and can talk calmly about why we feel the way we do, it may help others understand us better.

We may come to realize that if we were to experience those same different things in our life, we may feel differently too. We don’t have to agree with everything everyone says. If we’re honest, we just want to be understood and respected. Feeling misunderstood is a very uncomfortable feeling. It takes courage and honesty to speak your truth. But when you do, it feels good.
