Family Engagement

Hello Families,

My name is Lexi Lundberg and I am the PreK-5 Family Engagement Specialist for Moorhead Area Public Schools. Back to school can be a transition for everyone in the family. With a new transition to the school year, routines at home can help children and parents ease into fall successfully. Kelly Bartlett (2021)  from Green Child Magazine explains:

Kids thrive on routine because it gives them a sense of predictability in

their lives. Routines can help them feel like they have their needs met on

a regular basis. With a back to school schedule for kids, they are able to

depend on the sense of security they feel in a familiar way with their

other routines (p. 1)

Here are 3 simple routines you can do at home to help your child transition into the school year with success:

Help them empty their backpack each day. Each day backpacks are filled with take home folders, library books, lunch boxes and  more! Emptying out your child’s backpack each day will allow you to look through their folder, examine important notes from your child’s school/teacher, find any homework that has been assigned and preview the library books your child has picked to read for the week.

Create an easy bedtime routine. Getting enough sleep is crucial for all children. Help your child feel well rested and ready for their school day by setting a simple routine and bedtime each night. This could include packing their backpack and laying out their clothes the night before so they are ready for a successful next day.

Pack a water bottle. In the same way that sleep is critical for children, hydration is also important. Help your child to establish a routine of filling and packing a water bottle to bring to school each day.
