MnACTE Award Winners: Holly Strand-Rysgaard, Administrator of the Year; Alison Johnson, Career Guidance Teacher of the Year

The Minnesota Association for Career and Technical Education (MnACTE) recognized two standout leaders from the Moorhead High School Career Academy for their dedication to student success and workforce development in February. Assistant Principal Holly Strand-Rysgaard was named Administrator of the Year, and Alison Johnson received the Career Guidance Teacher of the Year award.

These state wide honors highlight the Career Academy's commitment to providing students with practical, high-impact educational paths that prepare them for the modern workforce.

Administrator of the Year: Holly Strand-Rysgaard

As the assistant principal who oversees the MHS Career Academy, Strand-Rysgaard manages all Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs along with several other academic initiatives. Her colleagues describe her as a lifelong advocate for CTE whose leadership is rooted in a blend of personal experience and professional expertise.

“To be recognized by colleagues through MnACTE is incredibly meaningful,” said Strand-Rysgaard. “The peers who are part of this organization understand the complexity, challenges and passion behind Career and Technical Education. Having their support and affirmation makes this award especially gratifying.”

Under her guidance, the academy has continued to expand its reach, ensuring that vocational training remains a top priority within the district. Her strategic vision has been instrumental in aligning school curriculum with industry needs, fostering an environment where students can thrive in both traditional and technical fields.

“Without question, this is a team award,” she added. “Any movement we have made within Moorhead Area Public Schools—particularly within our Career Academy—is the direct result of committed and ambitious CTE teachers, a supportive administrative team and the strong partnership I have with Tom Dryburgh, our Community Outreach Coordinator.”

Career Guidance Teacher of the Year: Alison Johnson

Alison Johnson was honored for her innovative work in a unique dual capacity. Johnson serves as both a family and consumer sciences educator and the work-based learning (WBL) coordinator. This 50/50 hybrid role allows her to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world application, giving students a direct line to local employers and hands-on experience.

Johnson's impact is clearly visible in the rapid expansion of the work-based learning program. Since she began, student participation has surged from nine students in her first semester to 23 students currently. By facilitating these practical opportunities, Johnson helps students navigate their career interests before they even graduate high school.

“The growth of our work-based learning program shows that more and more students are taking what they are learning in their CTE and core classrooms and seeking opportunities to expand on it,” said Johnson. “Students are looking for real-word experiences, industry connections and meaningful career exploration opportunities. The growth of the WBL program highlights not just increased participation but deeper student engagement in CTE and a stronger connection between classroom learning and their future career pathways.”

The recognition of these two educators underscores the important, impactful work happening daily within Moorhead Area Public Schools. Their efforts ensure that Moorhead students are not just earning diplomas, but are also gaining the specific skills and guidance necessary to succeed in their future careers.
