Blue Family Engagement Message

A Message from our Family Literacy Specialist:

Hello Families,

The end of the year is near and we want students to finish strong! One powerful routine to maintain with your children is reading together. Reading with your student builds vocabulary, listening skills, and is a positive way to bond and connect together. Engaging in reading conversation with your student can support this important work.

Below you will find example questions that could be asked before, during, or after reading together:

Story Books

Information Books

Before You Read:

  • Why did you pick this book?

  • What do you think might happen in this story?

While You Read:

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • Where is the story taking place?

  • If you were a character what would you have done?

After You Read:

  • What was your favorite part of the book? Why?

  • Did the problem in the story get solved? How?

  • If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be?

  • Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why?

Before You Read:

  • Why did you pick this book?

  • What do you think we might learn in this book?

While You Read:

  • Have you learned any new words so far?

  • What connections can you make between this book and your own life?

After You Read:

  • What was the most interesting thing you learned from the book?

  • Does this book have bold words? Glossary? Diagrams? How do these features help you as a reader?
