Michele Rolewitz was born in Moorhead, Minnesota and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. She was born Deaf and attended the North Dakota School for the Deaf in Devils Lake, ND and National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. Michele’s grandparents were deaf as well, so she learned sign language at a young age. Her parents are also fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

Michele works at North Dakota State University in the Financial Aid and Scholarships Department where she has for 41 years. She is actively involved in the North Dakota and Fargo/Moorhead Deaf communities. She teaches American Sign Language for Community Education and at the secondary and collegiate levels.

“ASL is a beautiful language to learn,” Michele emphatically states. Michele teaches ASL because she loves to see people learn about ASL and Deaf Culture. She mentors families with Deaf children, ASL students and professional interpreters. Her infectious positive attitude brings smiles to the people with whom she works.

Michele lives with her husband, Bernard and three cats: Bella, Ira and Daisy. She

has three daughters, who are all children of Deaf adults, and twelve beautiful grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, canning, traveling, reading, and spending time with family.
